A dredging operation in the Dutch town of Opende in Friesland (the North of Holland), was facing the challenge of finding a mobile pump unit capable of performing this immense duty point.
The suction dredge takes a mixture of sand and water from a lake and pumps it to a sand depot through a 4,5 kilometre long discharge line. After the sand settles, the pump is needed to return the excess water to the lake during the evening and night. This exceptional duty point, combined with the fact that the pump will run during the evening and night requires an exceptional pump solution.
Maximum performance at the lowest cost of ownership BBA Pumps is on a mission to develop equipment that provides maximum performance at the lowest cost of ownership. This design philosophy is applied throughout the range, irrespective of pump size or intended application. For the dredging operation, BBA has put this principle into practice and developed the BA-C500S11 diesel driven pumpset in the BBA Pumps 20 foot container.
Although the canopy conforms with the international shipping standards (CSC), it is by no means a standard 20 foot container. It has been custom-designed to meet the highest requirements and purpose built to house the BBA pumpset. As becomes clear from the pictures, the container is built in typical BBA style, featuring a fully galvanised frame and the trademark PE doors. Form and function go hand in hand with this pumpset, as the aesthetically pleasing design does not interfere with functionality. | |
Multi functional The application dictated that the pump-unit would be silenced, as the pump would be running during evening and nightly hours. With a soundemission level of only 67 dB(A) at 10 metres, this will be no problem whatsoever. In addition, the container meets the requirements for international container transport, which allows this extraordinary pumpset to be shipped and deployed across the globe. Furthermore, the excellent air flow in the container allows the unit to be used in ambient temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit).

| State of the art engines prepared for the future In order to facilitate servicing the pump unit, a standardised diesel engine concept has been developed in close cooperation with Volvo Penta and Caterpillar. This allows pump users to experience the benefits of the extensive global service network these engine suppliers have in place, minimising lead times for engine service parts and spares. Easy access to the engine is ensured as the container features four large doors allowing easy access. As the doors are lockable, unauthorised access to the engine, control panel or 700 litre on-board diesel tank is prevented. This particular unit has been developed for the dredging industry and features a high-efficiency BA-C500S11 pumpend offering a flow capacity up to 5500 m3/h (24.250 US GPM) and is fitted with wear resistant materials. The pump is fitted with the MP100 BBA vacuum pump and mechanical float-box assembly, making the pumpset dry self-priming. The pumpset can be supplied with Volvo Penta TAD1662VE with an AdBlue system or Caterpillar C18 ACERT TM diesel engines, depending on customer preferences.
In addition to installing these state-of-the-art diesel engines, BBA Pumps is looking ahead and preparing the pumps for the coming emissions regulations. Currently a pilot project is underway with a diesel engine concept that meets the requirements as set in the TIER 4, stage IV regulations, coming into force in 2014. The containerised pumpsets are available with a variety of pump-ends, depending on the customers’ requirements and wishes. |
Tools, spares and diesel to go When deploying a pump unit of this extraordinary size, one requires matching accessories. To ensure that everything that is needed for the installation of this 20 inch pumpset is readily available, BBA has developed a service container.
This additional container unit matches the look of the pumpset and is designed to hold items like the non-return valve, strainers, segments of suction & discharge piping, common spare parts ánd it features a small workshop. The workshop is fitted with a generator, lighting and a compressor to power air-guns required for installing the piping.
In addition to the tools and spares, the container features a 5000 litre diesel tank providing the required fuel autonomy for a the pumpset. Truly everything one needs to successfully install the pump unit is in arms’ reach with this service container.
