BBA emergency pumps avert flooding

Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch government agency responsible for infrastructure and environmental affairs, has installed two BBA mobile pump sets near Heumen (NL) to provide additional capacity for the pumping station in the canal that connects the river Meuse to the river Waal.

The pumping station that has a capacity of 6 m3 per second would have difficulties managing the peak in the water level when the floodgates in Weurt would be opened, thereby posing a threat to residential areas in the city of Nijmegen.

By installing the two diesel driven pumps, an additional capacity of 2,5 m3 per second (9000 m3/h) becomes available, allowing Rijkswaterstaat to keep the water levels below the critical mark and avoid flooding.

The pumps are 30" vacuum assisted centrifugal pumps that were custom built to meet the customer’s requirements and offer a maximum flow of 5000 m3/h each. These BA700 pumps are fitted with a sound-attenuating canopy allowing the pumps to run 24-7 without causing sound pollution.
