BBA pump for jetting

To ensure that the Antwerp harbour maintains its position as a gateway to Northern Europe, it is paramount that the port is suitable for even the largest vessels currently sailing the oceans. As a result, the port requires regular dredging in order to keep the port navigable for these giants of the seas. The Antwerp Port Authority removes large volumes of sludge every year and has been searching for a sustainable method of processing the sludge.

The Flemmish authorities have therefore started project AMORAS together with the Port Authority in 2008 and the system has gone on-line in April 2011.

AMORAS is an acronym for “Antwerpse Mechanische Ontwatering, Recyclage en Applicatie van Slib, which translates into Antwerp Mechanical Dewatering, Recycling and Application of Sludge.  As a part of the AMORAS project, the Antwerp Port Authority has commissioned a custom cutter suction dredger to be built to handle the enormous volumes of sludge to be moved, with onboard a pump from the BBA BA range.

This high power jet pump is being used to jet water into the bottom of the harbour, thereby stirring up the sediments and allowing it to be pumped  away by the dredger. This sound attenuated BA-C pump unit is a small, but crucial link in the 400 million Euro AMORAS chain, so a true “Pump for Results”!
