Mobile flood control pumps


A flood control pump is used for dewatering large volumes of water during flooding. In cases of stormwater or heavy rainfall, the ability to quickly respond is critical. The multi-use and flooding pumps from the BA series are designed to help you in such conditions. BBA Pumps is a manufacturer of portable pumps, piping systems and smart logistic solutions.

Multi-use flooding pumps 3" to 12"

Mobile multi-use pumps are often used to combat flooding caused by sudden downpours of heavy rainfall. Water boards and pump rental companies always have “medium-sized” pumps available for flood control situations. High volume flooding pumps 16" to 28"

When you need to respond to a major flooding, high volume flooding pumps are the best solution. Tackling floods often requires the use of 16-inch and larger diesel driven pumps. BBA Pumps is a specialist in large mobile pumps for tackling floods. The technical information below applies to the four models of high volume pumps: BA400G, BA500G, BA600G and BA700G. 

Standardized high volume pumps

The standardized mobile pumpsets from BBA Pumps are specified in detail. Quality control takes place throughout the entire production process, from the initial drawings to the FAT protocol. Unlike customer specified products, standardized pumps are manufactured based on a forecast of the market demand. Diesel driven high volume pumps are supplied to comply with the current worldwide legislation that governs emissions. All production drawings are available for review by the client upon request. The manufacture process runs according to a fixed production schedule and quality plan. Parts drawings are available for the centrifugal pump, the vacuum system and the canopy. An extensive user manual (with a choice of seven languages) and a 16-language warranty booklet are included. Standardized BA pumps are covered by the internationally applicable 4-year manufacturer's warranty. 

The high volume centrifugal pump 

The dry prime centrifugal pump is equipped with a mixed flow pump impeller with a large free passage. The pump curve is based on continuous use and follows the international standard ISO 9906. The pump efficiency at the Best Efficiency Point is 85% or higher. The high volume pumps are designed to deliver an excellent NPSHr curve so that the pump can run cavitation-free even at a high suction head.

The centrifugal pump has a number of innovations to enable it to operate as a dry self-priming pump without the risk of damage or compromising its working lifespan:  
  • The mechanical shaft seal has been specially developed by and for BBA Pumps. Dry self-priming pumps have to cope with alternating pressure and vacuum differences in the seal chamber.

  • The bearing frame is equipped with two separate oil chambers, one for bearing lubrication and the other for cooling the mechanical seal during dry running. Both oil chambers are equipped with sight inspection glasses and drainage and filling points on one and the same side.

  • Other innovations include a drainage channel and oil splash plate. Special features help prevent environmental pollution and ensure that the pump can still continue to run should the mechanical seal become damaged.
For the optimal inflow of the liquid to be pumped, the suction connection of the pump has a larger diameter than the pressure connection. The suction connection is equipped with a heavy mounting bracket, a vacuum gauge and a large inspection hatch that provides easy access to the pump impeller. There is also a large inspection cover on the pump housing. The pressure side of the centrifugal pump is equipped with a manometer.

High volume pumps vacuum system

The BBA Pumps vacuum system consists of three components:
  • A mechanical float box on the suction side of the centrifugal pump.
  • A non-return valve on the discharge side to ensure that no air is sucked in via the pressure line during suction.
  • MP100 vacuum diaphragm pump with an air capacity of 100 m3/hour.
The MP100 is a double diaphragm pump with a V-shape (2 x 50 m3/hour) so that in the event of an emergency or during a technical failure, one diaphragm pump can always be drawing water in. A diaphragm pump can pump condensation and a limited amount of water. The maximum vacuum range of the vacuum system is 8,5 meters.

Operation: When the diesel engine is started, the reduction gearbox is in a free-running position, so that the main pump does not rotate while the vacuum pump sucks in the liquid until the pump housing is filled. The main pump then switches on automatically and the vacuum pump stops priming. Switching off is done vice versa so that the unit comes to a smooth stop and the risk of water hammer is minimal. 

High volume pump power train

The high volume pumps are powered as standard by a Volvo Penta diesel engine. BBA Pumps units always comply with the applicable emission legislation. Depending on the final destination, the Stage/Tier emission level is determined in consultation with the customer.

The available engine power of standardized pumpsets always covers the pump curve. All diesel driven BBA Pumps have undergone a certified installation by the engine manufacturer. This allows the pumps to run at full load under warm weather conditions at any operating point in the pump curve.

A gear reduction box with the correct transmission is mounted between the diesel engine and the centrifugal pump. The reduction gearbox is hydraulic, equipped with special shaped gears to minimize mechanical noise, and is equipped with an oil cooler as standard.

A cardan drive shaft is mounted between the gearbox and the centrifugal pump. This has the advantage of removing virtually all vibrations that are transmitted from the engine to the pump. A further important feature concerns the alignment. When lifting and/or when the surface is not flat, the cardan drive shaft compensates for any torsion in the canopy ensuring that the alignment remains unaffected.

Sound attenuated canopy for high volume pumps

The diesel engine is supplied as standard in a sound attenuated canopy and the pump is placed outside on the frame (the BA400G is completely enclosed). The canopy frame is completely hot dip galvanized, guaranteeing a highly durable end product. Noise emissions are significantly reduced, with the noise level dependent on the engine power which is shown on the datasheet. Other features of BBA Pumps enclosures for high volume pumps;
  • The doors are made of composite and can be locked with identical door locks
  • The composite fuel tank reduces the risk of bacteria formation in the diesel
  • The bottom tray is leak-proof to prevent oil or fuel from leaking into the environment
  • Forklift pockets and lifting eyes ensure optimal material handling
  • The casing is fitted with work lights on the outside and inside the canopy
  • TÜV-certificate for welding work on the frame according to EN ISO 3834-2:2005
The canopy can easily be fitted with a pull-up frame for transport on a truck with a hook arm. Other options such as an external fuel tank, doors in your own company colour or telemetry are always possible.

Dashboard for high volume pumps

The dashboard has been designed by BBA Pumps to provide a modern look and feel. An LCD screen is used to read various parameters and J1939 error codes from the electronic diesel engine. A choice of various languages is possible. The lighting on the pumpset can be switched on and off using integrated push buttons. The dashboard is equipped as standard with automatic level control using floats or optionally a pressure sensor.

FAT and SAT for high volume pumps

BBA Pumps is fully equipped to carry out Factory Acceptance Tests. We can test the largest mobile high volume pumps at our test facilities. We also have significant experience with Site Acceptance Tests. We have completed major flood control projects worldwide. Our pump specialists are ready to provide training at our training centre in the Netherlands or on location.
