Quick coupling applications

BBA Pumps quick couplings are used for water transportation piping systems and for mobile pumps up to 12 inches. Quick couplings allow pipes and pump hoses to be connected in just a few seconds, making a complete and watertight pipe system. Typical applications include well pointing, flood control, construction and civil engineering.

How a quick coupling works

A quick coupling always consists of two parts: a male and a female part. They’re easy to recognise since the male part always goes into the female part. Depending on the type of quick coupling, for example bauer or cardan/perrot, one part has clamps and the other part has an edge behind which the clamps hook. There is always a rubber O-ring between the two couplings ensuring a watertight seal. 

Other names for quick couplings

There are many names in use for BBA Pumps’ quick release couplings, but they all mean the same thing. Some of these include: lever locks, quick disconnects, quick connects, fittings, quick disconnect fittings, quick release fittings, quick connect couplings.

Explanation of various quick coupling systems

We supply three different systems of quick couplings in a variety of sizes. Those couplings are compatible with the most common established brands. The BBA Pumps coupling systems are B, C and IT. For each system, we explain its features and to which other brands the couplings fit.

System B
This type of quick coupling is widely used on pumping systems in North America and Australasia. System B is interchangeable with bauer quick couplings. BBA Pumps produces this type of coupling in sizes from 3 to 8 inches. The ball shaped male connection features a separate ring with the lever and the hooks. This ring gives the user flexibility during connecting. In addition, the ring allows a slight angular rotation between the male and female parts. The female connection is fitted with an O-ring, and a ridge where the hooks clamp behind.

System C
This type of quick coupling is widely used on mobile pumps and pipes in Europe. System C is compatible with cardan, perrot and Handy quick couplings. BBA Pumps produces this type of coupling in sizes from 2 to 6 inches. The female connection part with the hooks and lever is fitted with a rubber O-ring. The male part is ball shaped and fitted with a ridge where the hooks clamp behind.

System IT
This type of quick coupling is used worldwide for high flow pumping systems. System IT is interchangeable with Italian quick couplings. BBA Pumps supplies this type of coupling in sizes from 8 to 12 inches. The female connection with the hooks and handle contains the O-ring. The male part is ball shaped and fitted with a ring where the hooks clamp behind. This ring gives flexibility for the user during connecting and allows a small angle between the pipes.

Flow direction quick couplings

Quick couplings have a preferred flow direction. This prevents unnecessary pipe resistance in the pipe system. We therefore always recommend installing the quick coupling in the system as follows: the fluid should flow in the direction from male to female.
